With an average of 800 stroke survivors on the Island, the need for caregiver support is essential to ensure the health and well-being of both the survivor and caregiver.
20% of caregivers of chronically ill individuals report experiencing depression as a result of their care giving responsibilities.
25 to 50% of people living with a chronic illness will also suffer from depression.
92 programs and services offered locally, by HealthPartners' members, are creating Living Proof of donations at work and transforming the lives of Islanders who are living with chronic disease and major illness.

A Snapshot of Donations At Work in PEI
ALS Canada
- Exclusively in PEI, financial support of $500.00 is provided to cover costs related to registration for hockey, figure skating, gymnastics, music etc. as the family see beneficial.
Alzheimer Society Canada
- The Alzheimer Society offers four different support groups across the Island in Montague, Charlottetown, Summerside, and Tignish.
Canadian Cancer Society
- 269 cancer patients and caregivers were connected with a trained volunteer who has had a similar experience.
More than 300 calls from PEI residents to The Cancer Information Centre 1-888-939-3333 answering cancer related questions and linking clients to support services.
This free service is available in 120 languages to all Islanders.
Canadian Diabetes Association
- 58 children with diabetes participated in D-Camp in 2015 where they gained independence and reached diabetes milestones.
- More than 600 Islanders attended Diabetes Learning Services presentations in the past year.
Canadian Hemophilia Society
- The Canadian Hemophilia Society supports Islanders participation in 2 different camps, Maritime Adventures Camp and the New Brunswick Canadian Hemophilia Society Adventure Camp.

Canadian Liver Foundation
- The Liver Foundation's Living with Liver Disease, a 9 session program, provides a forum for liver disease patients and families to come together to connect with others, to learn about their disease and discover how to cope.
Crohn’s and Colitis Canada
- Crohn’s and Colitis Canada offers information and support to Islanders living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease through the Gutsy Peer Support program. Individuals diagnosed with Crohn’s and Colitis or those experiencing a change in their condition can connect with mentors through a confidential on-line portal.
"I support HealthPartners when donating to the GCWCC because as a federal government worker I understand the effects of these diseases on our healthcare system and tax-payers dollars. On a personal level I choose to donate to HealthPartners because I have been impacted by many of the diseases that the 16 foundations that they represent.
Without these foundations many Canadians would be at a loss for support during some of their most challenging times."

Cystic Fibrosis Canada
- Islanders living with Cystic Fibrosis benefit from the funding provied to Cystic Fibrosis pediatric and adult clinics in Halifax or Saint John, NB as well as transplant clinics, should their disease progress to that extent.
Heart and Stroke Foundation
- 300 Islanders, who have had a heart attack, have benefited from the Change of Heart program which has helped reduce their risk of a second occurrence.
Huntington Society of Canada
- A child born to a parent with Huntington disease (HD) has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. The Huntington Society has HD Resources Centre Directors who are specifically trained to help families and professionals respond to the complex, challenges of HD.
Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
- The Quality of Life Grants from the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada offers financial support to purchase mobility aids, incontinece supplies, and more. Last year, 69 grants were approved, bringing more than $14,000 to Islanders.
Muscular Dystrophy Canada
- The Core Equipment Program and the Community Services Fund provide individuals with neuromuscular disorders access to medically necessary equipment.
Parkinson Society Canada
In PEI, Parkinson Society Canada offers support groups in Charlottetown and Southern Kings, and Islanders are able to participate in the Maritimes Young Onset Support Group which explores issues unique to being diagnosed with Parkinsons at an early age.
The Arthritis Society
The Arthritis Society's Chronic Pain Management Workshop is a single, two-hour course that focuses specifically on pain management. Participants have the chance to learn new information and skills, discuss ideas and share experiences.
The Kidney Foundation of Canada
- The Short-Term Financial Assistance Program has provided over $9,500 to Islanders with kidney disease to cover medical and other expenses associated with the disease and its treatment.
The Lung Association
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) sufferers can speak with a specially trained COPD educator on the toll-free BreathWorks Helpline.
